Changes in words and expression of Time and Place:

You sometimes have to change other words or phrases, such as those referring to time or place:

  • Joe said, "I posted the letter two days ago." (Direct speech)
  • Joe said he had posted the letter two days earlier. (Indirect Speech)
  • "I will fix your bike tomorrow", promised the mechanic.(Direct Speech)
  • The mechanic promised he would fix my bike the following day. (Indirect Speech)
  • "I have been waiting here for half an hour", complained Sally. (Direct Speech)
  • Sally complained that she had been waiting there for half an hour. (Indirect Speech)
  • Teacher said, "These cakes are for our Chief Guest". (Direct Speech)
  • Teacher said those cakes were for our Chief Guest. (Indirect Speech)
